The welsh international rally gained a reputation as one of the best European rallies of the day .
Organised by the south wales automobile club, the welsh started out as a national touring rally comprising of road sections and driving tests. It gained international status during the 1960s and soon attracted top drivers and works teams.
The intervening years, between 1963 & 1991, secured the event's reputation as one of the toughest and most enjoyable on the rally calendar. Utilising smooth, flowing forest tracks coupled with the asphalt roads of Epynt, the event bought a unique flavour to the British championship. It achieved European championship status in 1973 and the golden years ensued.
In the early 1980s entries declined but by the mid 80s the rally was on the up again. Sadly, high costs, economic instability and sponsorship difficulties saw the international rally draw its last breath in 1991.
The event was resurrected in 2001 and continues to run today as a club rally.
